Ivanna Gonzalez Group #1 retrospective
Hi everyone ! Today I want to share how our first presentation went and what we went over and learned .My group covered chapters 1, 2, 3, and 5 from "Public Speaking: The Evolving Art. The other groups focused on different chapters: group two covered chapters 4,6,7, and 8. Group three went over 9,10,11 and 12 . And finally group 4 went over chapters 13,14,15, and 16.We focused on key concepts that can really improve public speaking skills. Even though we were a bit nervous since it was our first presentation, we got through it, and I feel like we did great ! Let’s talk about everything that we covered and how it went .
The first chapter, "The Evolving Art of Public Speaking," I learned how technological advancements have changed the way we speak . It is important that in order for speakers to connect well with audiences, they must adjust to modern tools and different audience types. And this will help me engage better with my audience .
Next up ,Chapter 2, "Building Your Confidence," I discovered new way on overcoming nervousness. They talked about techniques like practicing often, visualizing success, and using deep breath techniques . By talking about our own experiences, I came to understand how having confidence can really impact our presentations.
In Chapter 3, "Listening," I learned the importance of being an active listener. The presenter pointed out that listening is more than just hearing words; it requires understanding and engaging with the speaker. skills like summarizing what others say and offering thoughtful feedback to improve communication.
Finally, Chapter 5, "Adapting Your Audience," taught me the importance of adjusting our messages to suit the audience’s interests and backgrounds. I discovered that analyzing audience demographics and preferences can help make my speech more interesting and meaningful.
Now let’s dive in into chapters 4,6,7, and 8 which group two presented . They did well and I learned some key points from there section.
Chapter 4 developing your purpose and topic . I learned the importance of defining the purpose of a speech. The speaker should know whether they want to inform , persuade or entertain their audience . It is important to pick a topic that will grab the audience attention . By using personal experience or brainstorming it can help me find something that connects with my audience .
Now moving on to chapter 6 which focuses on “ Researching your topic “ I learned that it is important to have good research in order to have a credible speech . It recommends beginning with your existing knowledge and exploring various sources , such as websites and interviews with experts . And also making sure to rely on reliable sources.
In chapter 7 “supporting your ideas “ I learned some useful ways to make my arguments stronger . For example I can share my own personal stories to help me connect with my audience . Using testimonies is also important for example mentioning celebrities or sharing stories from everyday people help make your point more clear. Using facts and definitions can help make a hard idea easier to understand . This tips help make my speech more convincing.
And finally chapter 8 “ organizing and outlining your speech “ I learned that having a clear structure is essential. A good speech includes an introduction , body and conclusion with each serving a purpose. The main idea should be clear and have about 2 to 5 key points to support it . Chronological or problem solution are different ways to organize your speech and can help your audience understand it better .Easy transitions between parts can help your speech flow well, and creating an outline can make sure I include all key points . These tips will help me deliver a clearer and more effective speech
Now that I’ve talked about how to create a speech , let’s move on to important parts of delivering it well which is what group 3 spokes about chapters 9,10 ,11 and 12 teach us
Starting of with chapter 9 “beginning and ending your speech . It teached me how to make strong and opening conclusions . The primary effect which means the audience remembers the start of a speech , so it’s important to begin with a story to grab attention and set a positive tone.
After learning about how to begin and end a speech in chapter 9 ,they started speaking about chapter 10 which is about “using language effectively “ . This chapter focuses on the importance on how you use your words ,and that slang and hard terms can confuse the audience . It is important to know what you’re going to say before you say it and choose your words wisely because once you say it you can’t take those words back . By using clear language it helps my message get across better .
Now chapter 11 “ integrating presentation media” is about using presentation media in my speeches . I learned that visuals like slides and videos can help make my message more clear and interesting. By having good visuals it should help explain my message better and not distract the audience . Using this tools during my presentation can help me .
Lastly Chapter 12 “ delivering your speech” I learned how to deliver a speech effectively. It is important practice , practicing is the key to feeling confident . Focusing on my voice , body language , and eye contact can help me connect with the audience . Using pauses is also important , because it gives the audience time to process on what you’re speaking about . How I deliver my speech is as important as what I say.
The last group to present was group 4 which they covered chapters 13, 14,15 , and 16 . They did a great job covering this topics .
Starting of with chapter 13 “ informative speaking “ . This chapter I learned about informative speaking which teaches or raises awareness about a topic . In order to keep your audience engaged you can use activities like quizzes or asked questions . The five different types of informative speeches are about objects , people , processes , events , and ideas. Overall Informative speaking can help communicate effectively .
Next up chapter 14 which speaks about “ persuasive speaking “ . I learned how to persuade your audience it is important to know how your audience feels about your topic . There are five main types: a negative audience is against your idea, a positive audience supports it, a divided audience has mixed opinions, an uninformed audience doesn’t know much, and an apathetic audience is aware but uninterested. It is important to understand your audience and be truthful because it helps persuasive speaking be more effective .
After learning about persuasive reading in chapter 14 , it’s important to understand argument which is what chapter 15 speaks about “ understanding arguments “ . I learned that an argument has a main idea that the speaker wants the audience to believe, and it needs evidence to be supported. If the evidence you’re using to back up your main idea does not relate it can make your argument weak. It is important to have strong evidence to support your main idea to convince the audience effectively.
Now let’s speak about chapter 16 “ distance speaking and media appearances “. In this chapter I learned that distance speaking includes presentations made online like through zoom, PowerPoint helping meaning it helps you share ideas with people from far . Media appearances is when news anchors or spokespeople share messages for there group . This two skills are important because they help you connect with the audience even when the speaker is not present.
Finally chapter 17 “Special Occasion and Group Presentations” . I learned about different speeches basically acceptance speeches, toasts, and after-dinner speeches. Each type of speech has its own specific purpose for different events . I also learned about group presentations, such as symposiums and panel discussions. Understanding these can help me feel more ready for various speaking events .
In conclusion, I learned a lot about public speaking from this presentation. Although, we felt nervous, using PowerPoints and flashcards helped us explain our topics clearly. Our classmates reacted positively, which motivated us and showed that our teamwork paid off. Overall, it was a valuable learning experience, and we were happy with how our presentation went. Thank you for listening!
Very nice reflection!
